DNS Quick Guide

DNS translates names such as example.com into IP addresses.

  1. Check whether the device has a valid IP address.
  2. Ping the default gateway.
  3. Test a public IP such as 1.1.1.1.
  4. If IP works but websites do not, test DNS resolution.
  5. Use nslookup example.com to test name resolution.
  6. Check the configured DNS server and try a known working resolver if appropriate.
Tip: A DNS problem can look like an Internet outage even when the network connection itself is working.

Ping Helper

Create a simple Windows ping command to test reachability.

ping -n 4 1.1.1.1
How to read it:
  • Replies received = the host responded.
  • Request timed out = no reply within the timeout.
  • Destination host unreachable = a routing/local connectivity issue may exist.
